I just got CKII and at first I was using Primogeniture for my kingdom, but i kept getting old men as my king and could never seem to get the "short reign" negative modifiers to go away. So i tried using ultimogeniture and that gets me long reigns, but now every time the king dies I seem to be stuck playing a little kid controlled by a regent. Am i doing it wrong? Is there a better succession law than those two above? Nightwing Creative Peanut 52 Badges.

Sep 13, 82 maesterblogger. Aug 27, 2. Mostly preference, none are really better. Myself I've been using primo for a while now. With ultimogeniture you can game the succession by basically arranging it so you don't have any new kids when your ideal heir is born, which typically means when your super mutant strong genius kid is born.

Primo is ideally more stable, despite your own case where you're getting the short reign modifier often. Compared to ultimogeniture where you're often going to end up having a regency, which can potentially be a problem: revolts, attempts on your life, regent giving away titles and so on.

You could make a strong case for elective. It used to be the 'best' since you could pick the best heir whenever you wanted. I haven't used it in a long time though, and from what I gathered, it got changed in a patch so that it's much harder to have the electors pick your chosen heir. Apr 19, 3. Make sure your kinsmen control most of the voting titles and you are good for heirs.Primogeniture self.

I noticed that primogeniture is a cultural innovation i can unlock during the late middle ages for my current culture, is there anyway to get primogeniture earlier? I haven't tried yet but you could use the seduction strat from ck2, seduce many women to get a lot of bastard and legetimise your favourite one or 2 to be sure.

If you're catholic you can make whoever you don't want to be your heir take the vows, all children are born with hooks that you can use. Or, if you don't mind using your renown, you can disinherit your children. It's a pain. Yeah, I haven't found a way either.

I do enjoy the whole "reset things when character dies" loop, though, as it makes for great storytelling I assume it will get grating after a while. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. All rights reserved. Want to join? Log in or sign up in seconds.

Try to get High partition and survive the suffering.Ultimogeniturealso known as postremogeniture or junior rightis the tradition of inheritance by the last-born of a privileged position in a parent's wealth or office. The tradition has been far rarer historically than primogeniture sole inheritance by the first-born or partible inheritance division of the estate among the children.

Ultimogeniture might be considered appropriate in circumstances where the youngest child had been assigned the role of "keeping the hearth", taking care of the parents and continuing at home, whereas elder children had had time and opportunity to succeed in the world and provide for themselves. In a variation on the system, elder children might have received a share of land and moveable property at a younger age, for example when marrying and founding their own family. Ultimogeniture might also be considered appropriate for the estates of elderly rulers and property-owners, whose children were likely to be mature adults.

There are several disadvantages for realms and families that adopt ultimogeniture. One such drawback is the fact that elder siblings, especially the first born of the relevant gender, will be heavily incentivized to sidestep the tradition, even more so if primogeniture inheritance is a familiar concept.

And since the elder siblings likely have more time and opportunities to gain power, wealth, experience, and influence prior to the inheritance—simply because they were born earlier—ultimogeniture traditions are more likely to be disregarded or even discarded. Coercionassassinationfratricideor even patricide can be committed, backed by all the advantage an elder sibling would have, such that ultimogeniture is sidestepped.

To clarify, those who stand to gain by ignoring the stipulation under ultimogeniture are more likely to have the facility to do so, when compared to other succession laws.

For example, under primogeniture tradition, the younger siblings will stand to gain if they can bypass said tradition, but the elder siblings still have the aforementioned advantages, so primogeniture traditions tend to persist. Primogeniture is a succession law where the eldest son or daughter, if gender laws permit inherits all titles. The heir to a ruler's title with primogeniture succession is determined through several steps, ranked from more to less important. Through this whole process, all people are assumed alive, even those who are dead.

In the family tree included to the right, William is an emperor that follows agnatic-cognatic primogeniture succession. According to rules 1 and 2, his son William is first to inherit and his daughter Wilhelmina second. Since William the Younger is dead and childless, he is disqualified according to rules 3 and 4.

So, Wilhelmina is the first heir. Because emperor William has no more descendants, we move up to his father Christopher. He is dead, so we move to Robert, the second eldest son. He is dead and childless, so he is disqualified. We then move to Adam but are faced with the same problem. Since there are no more sons, Roberta is next in line as the eldest daughter. However, according to rule 5, her son Thomas takes precedence.

So Thomas is the second heir and Roberta the third. All of Christopher's descendants have been assessed, so we can move up again in the family tree to Adam. Johann is next in line to succeed. He may be dead, but that does not mean his children are ranked any lower. His son Dietmar is the fourth heir we find. From the same principle, Dietmar's son Ludwig is the fifth heir. If a kingdom is already in existence, attempting to switch to primogeniture may be a daunting task due to the high CA requirement.

Primogeniture or ultimogeniture? Help for a newbie

Askyia 15 Dec, am. I'll never understand why Paradox used Partition as the standard when that only happened in Western Europe. It is kind irritating to see the Islamic, Indian and African empires completely crumble because of the Partition Law. For realms like France, England, Bulgaria etc this would really help against border gore.Ultimogeniture, also known as postremogeniture or junior right, is a system of inheritance whereby the youngest son gains possession of his deceased father's estate.

Many rural areas of medieval England used this system, as well as parts of France. It often applied to farmland, but sometimes included other types of land in addition to personal property. This system is very rare today. Historically, primogeniture has been the most prevalent inheritance system.

Ultimogeniture, primogeniture and other forms of traditional inheritance are very rare in modern society. Most developed countries rely on trusts and wills that explicitly state the desires of the decedent.

However, in the past, the position of birth and the male gender tended to determine inheritance rights. Practicality played an important part in this system.

As a result, a family patriarch often died while he still had one or more minor sons. Bequeathing land to the youngest son encouraged the older minor children to remain on the farm, at least until they became old enough to marry. While ultimogentiure kept sons on the farm, merchant families and nobility didn't have the same need for physical labor.

Instead, they tended to use primogeniture, which grants the right of succession to the firstborn son. Primogeniture was also the primary method for establishing royal lineages and naming new kings. As people eventually began to live longer, primogeniture and other social norms for inheritance slowly replaced ultimogeniture for all social classes.

Today, inheritance depends far less on gender and birth order. Also, because women make up a substantial percentage of the workforce, children inherit both from mothers and fathers, and sometimes from two of each, considering split families and same-sex households. No matter the family make-up, estate planning and a will is important.

A will stipulates the bequest of assets to heirs, as well as the settlement of estate taxes. In cases of intestacy, the property goes to a surviving spouse first, then to any children, then to extended family and descendants.

However, if no family can be found, the property typically reverts to the state. Intestacy can be avoided by creating a will. With the help of an attorney experienced in estate law, a will can be set up very inexpensively. In addition to wills, some wealthier families set up trustswhich grant certain legal protections to surviving spouses and children.

However, trusts generally are more complicated and costly. For this reason, simply having a will and spelling out who gets which particular assets is preferable in some instances.

Tip: The Ultimogeniture Gambit self. I was originally leery of this new succession law when it first came out, but after doing some testing, I'm finding I like it better than Primo.

This is how I made use of it:. The Law itself: The youngest eligible heir of YOUR direct children no grandchildren are factored becomes the first to inherit. It will follow your gender laws the same as Primo.

If your ruler gets the option to go the hedonism route, take it. Marry a young fertile wife, as you want lots of babies really early. While she's busy pushing out babies for you, make nice with the pope, parking your Chaplin in Rome if need be. More on that later. Keep having your wife pop out kids until she gives you a son with a good genetic trait. Once she blesses you with that wonderful child Alternatively, if you get the hedonism event chain and it progresses to the end, you can always choose the celibate option if you are happy with your youngest, thus eliminating the need to divorce your 1st wife.

When you go looking for a 2nd wife, pick someone who is 45 years old or older Or Celibate, that works too Since you won't be making babies with her, you don't care about her genetics.

By choosing when to turn off the baby fountain, you can effectively control who your heir will be without the need for murder. Risks: Just because a child starts life with a good genetic trait doesn't mean they'll be your star heir. Bad trait events and bad luck during them and bad stat growth can lead to a sub-par heir.

The early death of your ruler can put you into some very long regencies. With their older brothers already adults, you may have more problems with pretenders and claimants from them than you would in Primo, where the eldest is an adult but all their younger brothers are still children.
